What If 100 People Could Help Fund Your Career?
Streams are vanity. Fans are money. Here's the blueprint.
In Episode 1 of Symphony University, SymphonyOS founder Megh Vakharia distills nearly a decade of music marketing experience, from building SZAโs CTRL rollout to running campaigns for 21 Savage, Future, and Chance the Rapper โ into one core question: How do you build your first 100 true fans?
Your CliffsNotes:
Think in funnels, not followers โญ๏ธ
Megh frames the fan journey as 4 stages:
๐ง New listeners
๐ Passive fans
๐ฃ๏ธ Engaged fans
๐ฆธโโ๏ธ Super fans
With every release, your job is to move people one step further down the funnel.
Itโs not about asking โHow many streams?โ but โHow many passive listeners became engaged fans this cycle?โ
Know who youโre reaching and find them with lookalikes ๐
Answer these 3 questions before running any ad or content:
Who do I want to reach?:
Where do they hang out?
What am I releasing?
๐ Example: You're dropping a moody R&B track about identity and belonging. Your audience is Asian-American women, 18โ30, who follow SZA and Kehlani and live on TikTok and Instagram Reels. Now you know exactly where to show up and what to say.
๐Pro tip: The TikTok search bar is free market research. Search your genre or a lookalike artist and study what content is actually performing. That's your playbook.

Search on TikTok or Instagram
Own your fan data, especially their emails ๐ง
The only relationship you truly own is built on a direct email connection. Hereโs what Megh suggests you do:
๐งCollect emails by using pre-save campaigns and fan unlock tools for every release
๐ Reward people when they give you their email (first access, exclusives, personal updates)
๐ฐMonetize 500 engaged email subscribers rather than 50,000 passive followers

Take it a step further and email fans directly on Symphony by segment ๐
Make fans feel like insiders ๐ฏ
Most artists treat fans passively, but the ones who build lasting careers donโt. Here are three ideas to build a genuine human connection with fans:
๐ฑ Go live and raffle off a physical product to everyone who pre-saved your track
๐๏ธ Invite pre-savers to a private studio session
๐ค Run local ads offering a free show and connect with the fans who show up
There's no shortcut but there is a system ๐
Your first 100 fans arenโt found by luck โ theyโre earned.
The artists who win commit to the funnel: define the audience, reach them, collect the data, reward the believers, and repeat.
